Debian "trixie" Update
The code name for the next major Debian release after bookworm is trixie
. Although not due to drop until later this year, we’ve been using it here on both servers and desktops and although there are a few bits which are a little rough around the edges, it’s proving quite usable.
As with other distro’s each version has both a codename and number, in this instance “bookwork” refers to Debian version 12, and “trixie” to Debian version 13.
Moreover, on the Raspberry Pi in particular it solves a number of critical issues (at least for us) with things like ZFS. The latest version of ZFS in “bookworm” for example appears to have a kernel lock-up but when used in conjunction with some containerisation products such as Docker and Incus. Since upgrading our Raspberry Pi servers to “trixie” this problem seems to have evaporated.
The main outstanding issue seems to be that this version of the distribution is not yet managed by the security team so may not get security updates as quickly as “bookworm”.
