When working with slow communications links, tweaking Gnome can make all the difference ...
Purpose
How to speed up Gnome when running via NX on slower (non-local) communication links.
Prerequisities
You will need a Linux box running NX Server and a workstation (Linux or Windows) running NX Client.
Step by step
Gnome has something akin to the Windows registry and a tool to make changes to it called "gconf-editor". Be very careful when using the tool, inappropriate changes can render your account unusable.
- Start a terminal session using Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal.
- Type;
./gconf-editor
- Look for and change the following keys as desired:
- /apps/panel/global/upstream_session - controls the screen fade-out
- /apps/metacity/general/resuced_resources - speeds things up in varous ways, resorts for wire-frame boxes for moves etc ..
- /apps/panel/global/enanable_animations - untick this to avoid menu transitions etc ...
- /apps/gnome/interface/enable_animations - more of the same ...
Thus far these seem to the the key changes to make, although the desktop theme you use will also make a difference.
