Warzone 2100 is a real-time strategy and real-time tactics hybrid computer game, developed by Pumpkin Studios and published by Eidos Interactive.
Now released as OpenSource Warzone is a seriously addictive game in the style of Command and Conquer, albeit the graphics might look a little dated next to XBox graphics, this is a very playable game.
Single Player Campaign
This is a "set piece" which is going to keep you occupied for a long time, essentially it will teach you about how strategies work and how the different technologies come into play and at what levels. You need a degree of understanding in order to play the game and it's worthwhile completing the tutorial before jumping in with both feet. Until for example you understand the relationship between Oil Derricks and Generators you will find energy quite hard to come by (!)
Multi-Player Game
This has three modes although I must admit I've only tried the first;
- Player .vs. Computer skirmish
- Multi-player, connect via IP
- Multi-player, connect via Lobby (this always seems empty?)
The skirmish option allows you to play the computer on a number of different maps and is equivalent to some of the more exotic / challenging maps in the Single Player campaign .. the difference being it's real time and when you stop to design a new tank, the game continues without pausing (!)
Here are a few screen shots to give you an idea ...
Initial level, your first base ...
Skirmish, the final stages - an air-strike on an enemy base ...
Skirmish, the final stages - aerial bombardment ...
Just a point of to note, the version included with Ubuntu Hardy is relatively stable in campaign mode but a little flakey in Skirmish mode. I'm currently running version 2.1 beta4 and this "seems" to be 100% in all modes .. worth checking your version if you're having problems - development is ongoing, this is an active project!
