Adobe release new flashplayer (32bit + 64bit)

Sep 17th, 2010No Comments

A while ago to the annoyance of the community, Adobe Labs discontinued the 64bit Linux flash player plugin but to their credit they have just released a new 10.2 version.

According to Adobe, the Flash Player “Square” Preview Release is “designed for evaluation purposes only. We do not recommended that this release be used on production systems or for any mission-critical work”.

Available for Linux, Windows and Mac OSX – both 32bit and 64bit.

To try it for yourself download the tar.gz from here, and extract the libflashplayer.so file to your “/usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/” directory (after backing up the copy that already exists).

If the “/usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/” directory doesn’t exist, see if your current version of libflashplayer.so is in “/usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/” or “/usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/”… this depends on how you installed your current flashplayer plugin.

Update (10th Feb 2011):

The 32bit version is now final, and should be available in your package manager, or from the Adobe website. 64bit users still need to use the “Square” preview.
