Time to move to NZ!

It looks like the US is moving (well and truly) to the back of the pack in terms of being a place to encourage innovation in software development. The New Zealand government has just decided that computer programs will *not* be patentable! So, if you’re writing Open Source code and you don’t want to worry about Apple Microsoft Patent Trolls, at least get a .nz website address and code using a ‘down under’ alias …

openSUSE 11.3 released

openSUSE have released version 11.3 of their popular Linux distribution, with added support for smartphones, touchscreen and the Btrfs file system.

UK Gov & OS – revisited

Apparently the NHS’s purchasing deal with Microsoft which has been in place for the last 12 years has now ended. According to M$, the NHS currently use around £270M of Microsoft software, yet they only pay Microsoft £65M per year for it.

Tip: building from source

Ever reached a point where you simply have to compile a given application from source, but you find that to compile it you need all sorts of libraries that aren’t installed on your system? Do you then find you’ve no idea which packages contain all the libraries you want?

Everyone has their own favourite when it comes to editing, indeed people may have different favourites depending on what it is they’re editing. Whereas from the command line, for me there is little choice and vim takes the prize every time, in GUI mode things are a little less clear cut.

Task Coach

Recently I started having to track time spent on different projects and spent a little time playing with Gnome’s hamster, which appeared to be the recommended time Gnome time tracking program. After having now seen Task Coach, I can confirm that Gnome’s hamster has now died!
