The Axe man commeth?
So how many web sites do you suppose the UK government has and how much do you think it costs them (or should I say “us”)? Now bear in mind that these numbers won’t include many indirectly funded organisations, but how does 820 sound? On an annual basis that’s £94 million in software development costs and £32 million on staff.
GoogleCL Linux CLI Tools
For all the command line addicts out there, Google has released GoogleCL a command line utility for accessing their online services such as YouTube, Blogger, Calender, Contacts, Google Docs and Picasa.
Jason Holt (Google Street View Team) and Tom Miller (former Google Street View Intern) write:
“Ever wanted to upload a folder full of photos to Picasa from a command prompt? We did, a lot, last summer. It made us want to say:
$ google picasa create --title "My album" ~/Photos/vacation/*.jpg
So we wrote a program to do that, and a whole lot more”.

Useful applications you’ve never heard of – part # 1
There are many applications available for Linux that have not yet made the mainstream in terms of recognition, indeed there are many that never will. However, from the plethora of new applications floating around in the ether, there are some real gems to be found.
Thunderbirds are Go!
I’ve been using Thunderbird (version 2) off and on for a while as a backup for my WebMail systems and it works well enough, but it’s never struck me as the email client to have, partially because it doesn’t have all the integration my Zimbra system has. Mozilla have however just released a new Beta of Thunderbird version 3.1, and it’s definitely worth a re-visit – although be aware it’s not in packaged form just yet and does require a little tweaking to run.

Partition Magic!
Once upon a time the recommended method for installing Linux onto a machine that already had Windows on it was to purchase a commercial product called Partition Magic which would allow you to safely resize your Windows partition to make space for a new / additional Linux partition. These days there are things ‘built into’ the likes of Ubuntu to assist with this, but there are still times when you want to take a closer look at your disk, not least when your disk fails and you need to see what’s still there.
Support from M$
It looks like Microsoft is trying to help Linux for a change! From Tuesday it will no longer be possible to upgrade from older versions of Microsoft Office to Office 2010, which means some pretty hefty bills for people who want to keep up-to-date. Indeed you can end up paying more for your Microsoft Office than you paid for your PC in the first place (!)
